Rotary Club of Charleston, WV, makes history by electing Dr. Michelle Foster as President

Charleston, WV – On June 29, 2023, new officers were elected for the Rotary Club of Charleston. Dr. Michelle Foster, President and CEO of The Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation, will serve as President for the 2023-24 term. She will chair her first club meeting on July 10th at 12 pm.

Dr. Foster’s election is historic as she is the first Black person to serve as President in the club’s 108-year history. Members of her leadership team include Patricia Schumann, President-Elect; Kimberly Zwier, Secretary; Wallace Suttle, II, Treasurer; Directors Corleen Patterson, Michael Cadle, Brian Sloan, Craig Glover, Dr. Arthur Rubin, Jessica Silber, Melissa Pemberton, Jerry Roueche’; and Justin Southern, Immediate Past President.

Michelle, who became a Rotarian in 2017, said, “I am honored to serve as the Charleston Rotary President. I look forward to leading our club in more impactful community service projects as we make Charleston an even better place to live, work, play, pray, and raise a family.”

The club was established when John D. Steele, President of Chieftain Manufacturing Co., began discussing the need for a Rotary Club in Charleston. On December 1, 1915, the charter was granted. One year following its establishment, Charleston Rotary Club took on its first project, purchasing park benches for Ruffner Park on Kanawha Boulevard. With 176 members, the Charleston Rotary Club is the largest Rotary Club in West Virginia.

The Rotary’s mission is to serve others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through our fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders. The most recent service projects for the Rotary Club of Charleston include raising more than $153,000 to revitalize Celebration Station located on Charleston’s East End and dictionary and literacy projects at area elementary schools.

The club meets over lunch at noon on Mondays in the Kanawha County Public Library downtown. Visitors and new members are welcome to join this service organization.
